A Jewish Woman’s Journey Through Personal and Community Suffering

By Mindy Rubenstein

As I headed to the hospital in Haifa today to support my closest friend after her heart procedure, I watched the birds soaring overhead and briefly questioned whether they might be b*mbs. Just an hour earlier, the sounds of booms filled the air, a reminder of our current reality. Yet, as I gazed at the clouds shifting and the sun breaking through, illuminating the Mediterranean Sea along the coastal highway, I felt a profound beauty and sense of peace.

In the hospital, holding my friend’s hand while she requested more pain medication, I felt a deep sense of helplessness. I read Psalms, trying to offer comfort and stay positive. With so much suffering around us, it can be challenging to comprehend the weight of it all. My parents’ house in Florida was devastated by hurricanes, and my daughter’s boyfriend is serving in the army in G*za.

Later today, I’ll visit a Holocaust survivor at a nearby kibbutz. She has been struggling with panic attacks and also recently had surgery. So sometimes I sit with her, reading Psalms for comfort.

In these challenging times, it’s essential for me to prioritize self-care and remain connected spiritually, mentally, and physically. As I navigate perimenopause, I’m learning the importance of embracing my emotions, acknowledging that they are part of a broader cycle of change. Embracing the ebb and flow of life—the highs and lows, the joy and the sorrow—enables me to nurture myself so I can better support those around me.

As a spiritual Torah coach for women and teens, I strive to empower myself and to transform struggles into strengths. As it says in Tehillim 126:5, “Those who sow in tears shall reap in joy.” Let’s continue to uplift one another during these challenging times.

Finding My Voice: A Writer’s Journey

By Mindy Morasha Rubenstein I began this journey as a writer before I knew exactly what I was writing about. I was the “lost child” in my family, growing up in chaos, and I didn’t know how to rescue others — but I did know I had a voice. I would later discover that writing…

The Hidden Abuse No One Talks About

I don’t have any bruises or scars, so you’d never know. What actually constitutes emotional or financial abuse can be so subtle. For nearly three decades, I’ve lived in a nearly constant state of confusion, moving between being triggered by emotional abandonment and wondering if I was the one who was crazy. Maybe at times…
